Last season cooling performance seemed poor with the freezer plate refusing to generate any ice coating and not feeling particularly icy to the touch. This year having installed new batteries, all fully charged, the engine was run and the fridge tried. Cooling performance remained very poor. After 30 minutes the freezer plate remained only cool to the touch.
INSTALLATION AND SERVICE INSTRUCTIONS ISOTHERM 3000/3500 is a modern cooling system for yachts, motorboats and mobile homes, using a freezer unit for storing the cold.
My guess is that the refrigerant gas (R12?) and/or the alcohol in the freezer plate has finally vacated their intended places after 12 years of use. The more likely culprit is that the relevant seacock isn't opened when you've tried using the unit, thus preventing heat-exchange from taking place - ie the refridgeration relies on seawater cooling the heat-exchanger, simple as that. On our V27, the heat exchanger is situated in the cockpit overflow drain seacock - which, unless you're expecting to be pooped in the Southern Ocean, doesn't need opening - unless of course you want your fridge to work properly. Check your instruction manual or go to - this explains that the refridgeration will work with the seacock closed, but only to a very limited degree. Hope this helps.

I fear that our installations may be a generation apart. The Isotherm 3000/3500 'kit' has an air cooled compressor and there are no cooling pipes running from the installation to any skin fittings. It is the decline in performance over 2 seasons that leads me to explore whether or not the compressor gas or freezer plate alcohol needs to be, and can be, recharged. Thanks again.

I am not at all technically minded but I understood that this would be more efficient than the standard system. It certainly keeps the icebox very cold with acceptable battery draw. Apparently it is especially efficient in warm/hot climates. I have not experienced much heat in northern europe recently! Bit late now, the chain saw may have done its job, but on the 461 the compressor is in the bilge adjacent to the cooker area. Secondly a tool I can heartily recommend for this sort of work, link below.

The good thing about it is you can start at any point and go in to any depth, cut out the shape you want and no extra saw kerf around the sides. FINE also do one, but out of my budget. The cable connector which lay under the compressor in the bilge (!) was corroded (it should have been hung up) The ugly part part was the sawing and now we will have to put a mahagony playwood cover over it.
Thanks to the fast response of Hanse After Sales we knew on which side to drill. The electrician doing the job couldn't believe his eyes that Hanse forgot to make this inspection door.
